Kelp

14th April 2025 Kathleen Drew Day

Hiroshi Yasuda got in touch out of the blue in January 2025 to share his excitement about kelp and blue carbon. We started a conversation about artistic and musical practice that springs from our concerns about the climate crisis. It’s wonderful to make this reconnection with Japan, and with Makoto Nomura.

At our third conversation, Nomura told us about the English scientist Kathleen Drew who made such a significant discovery about nori seaweed that she is worshipped as a god in Kumamoto.

We decided to honour Kathleen Drew on her special day, as close in time as possible to the shinto ceremony in Kumamoto, as close to the sea as we can get – ideally, in the sea! We invited some friends and family near and far to take a moment for Kathleen.

Exeter Sound Walks in Art Week Exeter

I’m delighted that Exeter Sound Walks are featured in this year’s Art Week Exeter from 6th – 12th June.

Illustrator Hannah Mumby has created a composite map of all my maps that is pasted up on the wall at Exeter Phoenix – you can find it on the ground floor opposite the steps down to the basement. Hopefully people will be able to download my maps from the QR codes listed there.

I’ve created a Sound Walk podcast conversation with Volkhardt Müller that you will be able to listen to soon.

And there’s a Sound Walk, together, on Sunday 12th June at 2pm. Contact me for details.
